The Sound of Changsha Kiln
2022
“Sound waves do not die out. They travel forever and forever.”-Fay Weldon
Future Changsha Kiln is a sculptural sound-based installation inspired by Changsha kilns, a key symbol of medieval globalization and China’s Maritime Silk Road. Rather than treating Changsha kiln forms as fixed historical objects, the work responds to their continuous transformation and asks: What might a Changsha kiln become in the future?
During field observation of kiln-making processes, the artist recorded the distinctive sounds produced through crafting, firing, and handling ceramics. These sounds are treated as the living “genes” of Changsha kilns—intangible elements that carry cultural memory across time. Using digital and parametric technologies, the invisible sound waves are translated into physical form and shape the sculpture itself.
Drawing on the structural principle of a conch shell, the sculptures invite visitors to place their ears to the vessel’s opening, where layered sounds emerge like echoes from the sea. The experience evokes the voices of ancient maritime exchange, recalling the Belitung Shipwreck and the global circulation of ceramics along the Maritime Silk Road.
By combining sound, sculpture, and new technology, Future Changsha Kiln offers both a visual and auditory encounter with heritage. The work proposes new possibilities for the future morphology of Changsha kilns and explores how intangible cultural heritage can be regenerated through embodied, multisensory experience.
